What Is An Orthoptist?
The word Orthoptic comes from the Greek words orthos meaning straight and optikos meaning relating to sight. Orthoptists see both adults and children with a wide range of conditions affecting their vision. Patients may be aware of reduced vision in one or both eyes, blurred vision, double vision or they may have a squint (misalignment of the eye), uncontrolled movement of the eyes or an abnormal head posture.
Orthoptists offer treatments for the management of these conditions which may include glasses, eye patches, exercises or prisms. Orthoptists also work with patients with neurological conditions such as stroke or brain tumours, endocrine disorders such as thyroid issues or diabetes and patients who have had injuries to the face or orbit. They help patients to manage the visual symptoms of their condition and provide advice for their rehabilitation.
Who Should See An Orthoptist?
All children with reduced vision, which has not been corrected with glasses
All children or adults who have a squint
All children or adults who have uncontrolled movements of the eyes
Anyone with double vision
Anyone with visual symptoms (headaches, blurred vision) which is not corrected by glasses

I want to thank you for all your help and support with Jacks vision over the last 4 years. You have, on every trip, made Jack feel very special, took time to helped us to understand about Jacks vision (and coached us with the dreaded patch testing). We are very grateful. Thank you!
Julie
I don’t know what I would have done without you. I really appreciate very very much for what you did for me on that day and the following up. I also would like to express my gratitude for looking after me over the last five years, since I have been diagnosed with glaucoma. Your patience, warmth and professional advice are second to none. Is a great comfort to know that you are always there for me.
